What is Chenda Melam?
Chenda Melam is an ancient Kerala percussion ensemble tradition with roots stretching back over 2,000 years — a sacred art form and spiritual practice performed at temple festivals, kathakali performances, and major cultural celebrations across South India. It combines intricate rhythm cycles (talas), polyrhythmic patterns, and ensemble coordination to create a mesmerizing, meditative sound that connects performers and audiences to Kerala's living cultural heritage.
Through authentic training in the Kerala Kalamandalam tradition, students learn not just drum techniques, but also the discipline, focus, and cultural wisdom embedded in this centuries-old art form. Our program offers live instruction directly from Kerala masters, maintaining the integrity and depth of traditional Chenda Melam pedagogy.

Live Online Classes
Mondays & Wednesdays, 9–10 PM ET via Zoom. Led by master instructor Guru Akhil Marar from Kerala. Sessions are recorded for review.
In-Person Practice
Sundays (afternoon schedule). Group practice sessions and ensemble preparation for performances in the Atlanta area.

Not at all! We welcome complete beginners of all ages. Our classes start from the fundamentals, and you'll progress at your own pace.
What equipment do I need?
You'll need a Chenda (traditional drum). We can guide you on affordable options and where to purchase or rent one locally.
Can I try before committing?
Absolutely! Your first trial class is completely free — no credit card required and no obligation to continue.
What are the class formats?
We offer online classes via Zoom (Mon & Wed evenings) plus in-person group practice sessions on Sundays. You can participate in whichever format works for your schedule.
What age groups do you teach?
We teach kids, youth, and adults. Whether your child is 12 or you're starting at 50, there's a place for you in our community.

How is this different from other percussion or cultural programs?
We teach Chenda Melam percussion exclusively — authentic ensemble training rooted in 2,000+ years of Kerala temple tradition. Unlike general percussion classes or cultural recreation programs, we follow gurukula-style pedagogy with live instruction from Kerala masters. Students work through complex rhythm cycles (talas), polyrhythmic coordination, and meditative ensemble playing for learners committed to mastering the art form.
Is Chenda Melam only for people of Indian or Kerala heritage?
Not at all! While Chenda Melam has deep cultural roots in Kerala, students from all backgrounds are welcome. Many of our students are non-Indian and find powerful personal and cultural fulfillment in learning this tradition. It's about appreciating and preserving a beautiful living art form.
Will I get to perform after learning?
Yes! After building foundational skills (typically 2-3 months), students perform at real temple festivals, cultural celebrations, weddings, and community events. Performance is a core part of the Chenda Melam tradition.

Is this group or 1:1 instruction?
This is authentic group ensemble training with cohorts of ~25 students per batch. Learning in a group is essential to Chenda Melam — you develop ensemble coordination, listen to other drummers, and experience the meditative power of collective rhythm. The Guru provides personalized feedback within the group setting.
When is the next batch opening?
Our current cohort started March 1, 2026, and is at full capacity with 22 students. Next enrollment dates are TBD. We're finalizing the schedule for our next cohort. Join our waitlist and we'll notify you as soon as enrollment opens.
What are the current rates for enrollment?
